Manual Handling Risk Assessments

Manual Handling Risk Assessments

Manual handling can be described as transporting or supporting a load by hand or bodily force. As well as lifting, this can also include lowering, carrying, pushing or pulling.

The important factors to keep in the forefront of your mind when handling large objects at work are the weight, size, distance you are carrying it, and where you are placing it (e.g. is it the floor or a shelf?). It is proven that awkward postures and heavy manual labour are all contributing factors to musculoskeletal disorders. According to HSE, these disorders account for more than a third of work related illnesses reported each year.

What Should You Be Doing?

The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 (MHOR) requires employers to assess and manage the risk to their employees. This requires the employer to make suitable and sufficient assessments of the task and reducing the impact of injury by using a hoist where available, or ensuring the employee has sufficient manual handling training.

The regulations require the employers to do the following:

Avoid – where possible and practical, the employer needs to consider where the movement of heavy objects can be avoided.

Assess – the employer must risk assess the activity to ensure it’s as safe as can be for the person carrying out the task.

Reduce – the employer must reduce the risk of injury as far as reasonably possible.

How Can Sureteam Help?

Manual handling affects many organisations in different ways from construction sites to office based work. Our specialist team are trained in all areas to ensure that they can give you sound advice so that you comply with UK law and avoid accidents and any subsequent legal action.

A fully qualified member of our team will visit your premises and conduct a full and detailed risk assessment. We will then write a report of findings and recommendations.

We also offer Manual Handling training courses designed to educate participants on safety procedures all around the safety of moving heavy objects.

Frequently Asked Questions

The law doesn’t identify a maximum weight limit. It is employers duty to manage and control risk, and therefore make reasonable decisions based on the individual carrying out the handling operation.
When carrying out a Manual Handling Risk Assessment, you should consider 4 main areas: the nature of the task, the capabilities of the individual performing it, the characteristics of the load and the layout of the environment.
Yes, we can! Incorrect techniques and inadequate health and safety training on manual handling can lead to injuries, back pain, limb damage and potentially worse.

Our Manual Handling training courses offer the choice of classroom based or online training.  Both will provide attendees with the essential information needed to understand the risks associated with manual handling and how to ensure appropriate measures are put in place to keep themselves and others safe.   Find out more on our website or give us a call on 01666 503686.

They are always accessible and happy to help support anyone within the organisation and through our ever-evolving relationship we have been able to build and maintain a safe and secure organisation for our teams, customers and wider community.”

Claire Bryan, Director of People Excellence, Squared

The training that we received from Sureteam was fantastic. Peter was informative, knowledgeable and made the training accessible and relevant to us. Peter related all the information to the context of our setting and used examples to highlight the important information that we needed as well and giving us advise about what we could improve and take forward following the training.

Sureteam really are the whole package when it comes to Health and Safety providers. As an in-house Health and Safety Manager the safety of my staff and customers is paramount at all times but with the additional support of Sureteam I have added piece of mind that I am supported fully.  Whether it is helping me to stay up to date with regulation changes, get a fresh set of eyes on our procedures or get additional, practical advice and support on new issues should they arise.  Over the years I have developed a fantastic, close working relationship with the entire team at Sureteam and look forward to that continuing for many years to come.

Gill Findlay, Installation QH+S Manager – Langley Design

Having worked with Sureteam since we started the business and been impressed by their expertise and professionalism, we knew that we wanted to partner with them for this larger project. Knowing that we could trust them absolutely to ensure our compliancy with the CDM Regulations and to deliver and provide high-quality health and safety advice, documents and training was so important to us, our sub-contractors and ultimately our client.

Our new two-tier contract system with Sureteam, really provides us with the flexibility and service that we require given the changeable nature of the projects we work on and helps ensure our budgets are spent wisely.  Knowing we have their support in this way means we can tender for larger projects with confidence.
